Liushahe’s fun way of learning Chinese characters

“An open palm is Da, a flag in the middle of a round is Zhong.” March 31th, the project of Free Lesson for Children of Migrant Workers 2014 started its sixth lesson at Primary School of Shuangyanjing. A vivid lesson on Chinese characters was given to 120 sixth grade students by the well-known poet and scholar Liushahe.

“When I agree to give this lesson, the first thing I thought about was what Chinese characters are more related to the children’s lives.” Though being the author of Liushahe teaches Chinese characters and Words Detective, Liushahe confessed:”I was so nervous at the thought of the children being bored.” But the lesson turned out to be very successful that it was extended from 45 minutes to 1 hour. Liushahe has prepared some cue cards in the size of a palm with over 10 Chinese characters written on them, both in simplified and complex form as well as hieroglyph. He showed them during the class from time to time in case he was so nervous that he might miss out something. “My throat did not feel well, but the children were very focused and the class was well-organized.”

The project started in 2012 with ten reputed teachers going to primary schools in Chengdu. By the year of 2013 there were fifteen teachers. And in the past two years, twenty-five teachers who are active in the fields of painting, literature, music and sculpture have brought all kinds of interesting lessons to thousands of children from twenty-five schools

This year there were 20 volunteer teachers. The project started on February 27th, with ten of the teachers---five of them were newly recruited this year---working together. Professor Wang Jiakui from Chengdu University of TCM gave a lesson on plant references in idioms. Li Yuxiang, a famous photographer, showed students the magnificence of our hometown through cameras. Professor Yan Jia from Sichuan University talked about the appreciation of oil painting. Yao Haijun, deputy editor-in-chief of Sci-Fi World Magazine, guided the children to learn about the beauty of Sci-Fi literature. And well-known scholar and writer Xiao Ping shared his idea of the wonderfulness of reading. These are the five newly recruits. The five old members were sculptor Zhu Cheng, Children’s Arts educationist Zuo Zhidan, the loveable Uncle Cheng Yue, zoologist and botanist Zhao Li, and Shen You, director of the bird watching society of Chengdu. They brought sculpture class, art class, sinology class, butterfly-watching and bird watching class. The colorful dreams of the children were winged by the lessons and the teachers.

Nearly thousands of migrant children were benefited by this project.” There are many migrant children in these schools, this project can really open their eyes and minds.” Xiao Juncheng, instructor of the affiliated primary school of Chengdu Normal University Bailuxi Campus told us that there are over 100 migrant children who are infrequently exposed to the outer world. But the teachers brought in all these kind of knowledge. Most of the chosen schools are with a ratio of migrant children over 50%. Many of them used the biggest classroom this time to allow more children to take the lessons, that is two or three hundred at most and fifty or sixty at least.
